It’s the summer holidays, and although the season brings some of the best weather to the northern hemisphere it also brings the school children and plenty of beach ready tourists. If you like your retreat to be free of masses of other people slathering on sun cream and blaring music from their over exerting Bluetooth speakers, then you need to find somewhere secluded. One of the places that tick this box that Mexicali has to offer is the Canyon de Guadalupe. This place is quite literally an oasis as in it is a lush green area amongst the desert sand and stones, nestled away in a rocky slope out of sight. What this means for you is that this isn’t the sort of place people are going to casually flock to in the holidays, and what’s even better is this natural area has plenty of things to do if you love being out in the open air without any creature comforts.
Tough to Get To
Though this may seem like something clearly for the cons’ column, its secluded nature is a huge perk as access to this place is limited. Firstly, it’s located around 50 miles from the highway in Mexicali, leading down a long stretch of dirt road that people aren’t generally going to be wandering through. After this however four wheel drive vehicles are the only thing really capable of getting here, other vehicles may struggle however thanks to the steep ascent that will instantly put a quick stop to anyone cruising in a convertible sports car.
When you do arrive though you will instantly be rewarded with the breath-taking views that the mountains provide you with. Here you can see the mountains become plains in the distance as thee highest points give you clear sight for miles around. In the area the plant life that has decided to grow here makes for a great green pocket amongst the grey stone. Even more fascinating is the crystal clear water that has its own dedicated spots, from the wonderful waterfalls that you can enjoy the spray and splashes from, essential if you are planning to visit in the hotter months. This area is also home to some natural hot spring that make for a fun and relaxing rest spot and will keep you cosy as night sets in. As if this wasn’t enough the mud here has some great qualities and can be used for full body bathing, great for your skin and circulation.
If the aforementioned natural sites aren’t enough to keep you content here you can always keep yourself entertained with some birdwatching, the native winged creatures of the area provide a birdsong background and can also be seen enjoying some of the same sites as yourselves. Bike riding and hiking here is also ideal as you can make your own paths or follow the natural ones created by the mountains. There is a dedicated camping area here too for those who don’t want to leave, tables, toilets and showers are all on site here as you sit around the fire and stargaze all night long.
